Durians[1] appear in the Super Mario franchise as tan, spiky fruits, based on an actual fruit of the same name from southeastern Asia.
Durians in Super Mario Sunshine are interactive objects. Their thorn-covered exterior prevents Mario from being able to pick one up, unlike other fruits, but he can kick it like a soccer ball, as explained by FLUDD. Despite the durian's spikes, Yoshis can still eat them, turning their skin and Juice purple, allowing them to turn enemies into purple forward-moving platforms.
In Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. One of the worlds is known as the Durian Kingdom, and it consists of two levels, Battle for Storm Hill and Aerie Fortress, both having an oversized durian for Donkey Kong to eat at the end.
Durians in Mario Party DS appear in the minigame Hexoskeleton, where after being hit twice, Dry Bones will start ground-pounding the arena, creating a force that may drop a durian. If Dry Bones ground-pounds one, he will be stunned for a while before he starts to ground-pound the arena again. If the player wins the minigame twice, the player will earn the Boss Trophies collectable, which depicts a durian.
Durians in Super Mario Odyssey and the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker are spit out by Cookatiel in its rematch battle for the former, and throughout Cookatiel's Sizzling Sprint in the latter.

Trivia
- In Super Mario Sunshine, there is a soccer ball object in the test level "test11" which acts similarly to the Durian and comes with a cardboard box to serve as a goal. It was most likely used for testing their functionality, specifically when Mario kicks it into a Pianta's basket.
- In Pianta Village's tree that grows all of the kinds of the fruit in the game, knocking down the durian and going towards it at a specific angle will cause Mario to be stuck in a loop of him kicking it at the tree, which reflects it back. It will create a large cloud of particle effects.[2]
